The Sixth WMO International Workshop on Monsoons (IWM-VI)
The Institute of Environment, Energy and Sustainability (IEES) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was a co-sponsor of the Sixth WMO International Workshop on Monsoons (IWM-VI) from 13 to 17 November 2017 in Singapore. This quadrennial Workshop was organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Working Group on Tropical Meteorology Research (WGTMR) Monsoon Panel, and hosted by the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS). Other co-sponsors include the Climate Variability/Global Energy and Water Cycle Exchanges (CLIVAR/GEWEX) Monsoon Panel, Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) Task Force, Subseasonal to Seasonal (S2S) Steering Group, Years of Maritime Continent (YMC) Scientific Steering Committee, and the World Scientific Publishing Company.
The workshop was opened by Mr Khoo Seow POH, Deputy CEO of the National Environment Agency (NEA) of the Republic of Singapore. Other VIPs present include Ms. Ching Ling WONG, Director General of MSS, Ms. Nanette LOMARDA of the World Weather Research Programme of WMO, and Professor C. P. CHANG, Chair of the WMO/WGTMR Monsoon Panel. The welcome reception was hosted by Mr. Ronnie TAY, CEO of the NEA. Throughout the week-long workshop, about 150 scholars, researchers, and forecasters, including many renowned scientists from all six continents, discussed recent advances and current issues covering all time scales (meso-, synoptic, extended range, intraseasonal, climate) that are relevant to the forecasts of high-impact weather in the monsoon regions around the world. The research findings were presented in over 75 oral presentations and 50 posters grouped under four themes: Regional Monsoon, High-Impact Weather, Intraseasonal & S2S, and Modeling and Climate Change.
